5 out of 5 stars As near to perfection as you can get.   November 11, 2008

I really did my research. I looked at several other MP3 players on the market, read reviews and really agonised over my choice.

The X-Fi was one of the first players I looked at and read reviews on. The reviews by and large were positive and it was becoming a clear choice for me initially, until it became obvious that the software provided with it was for Windows only. The player then was beginning to sound very Windows centric, which worried me, being a Mac and Linux user. I was put off.

I then dabbled with the notion of getting an iPod. Despite being a Mac fan, I have always had reservations about getting an iPod. I looked at Nano's and the Classic as alternate options. The price tag, along with reviews about poor sound quality and the need for investment in better quality headphones was a turn off. Also (as far as the Nano was concerned) no way of expanding storage capacity.

I still felt myself drawn to the X-Fi. The final element that swayed it for me was being able to buy the 16GB version of the X-Fi for £106 - compared to it's RRP of £140. It was the clincher.

I'm glad I jumped at it! I've had the player for a two weeks now, and it has been fab!

All the positives in previous reviews are correct. It's easy to use, the sound quality and video playback are ace. Battery life is great. The expandable storage is fab. It doesn't integrate as pointed out (the SD memory with the player), but I don't find that a huge bugbear. It still ID3's the tracks, so it's still totally workable. You can't pull tracks onto the player from the SD card, only photos, but it's still no big gripe for me.

The biggest positive for me was this. Despite being provided with Windows software and having a program called "Creative Centrale" that only runs on a Windows machine, my Mac can see it. I use a program called XNJB which gives you an MTP user interface to upload/download MP3's with relative ease. It's not the MOST compatible way to do it, but if you, like me, are a Mac user and were reticent to buy Zen products due to incompatibility, rest assured.

My only gripes are the fact that it doesn't come with a mains adapter for charging and the USB cable that comes supplied is WAY too short. The X-Fi feature is bogus. The player has such great sound quality that it's rendered useless. Unless you have REALLY poor quality MP3 tracks (and frankly, why would you?), I doubt you'll ever switch the X-Fi feature on. And for me being a Mac user, I couldn't get the player to recognise AAC tracks. It does on an SD card, ID3 tags them and all, but NOT if I load them on the player itself.

All in all though, the player is fab. I'm glad I went with it. I'm overall very happy. I'd give it 4.5 stars out of 5, but Amazon don't do half stars. I'd only take half a star off for the minor negs.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than an ipod and cheaper!!   May 24, 2009

I first found this Mp3 player/video player thing when I was looking for something that was well constructed and designed that WAS NOT AN IPOD as I really do not like the whole "sync with Itunes" thing. The Zen X-Fi is all three of these things and much more. For starters it is very solidly made, I drop it all of the time just for fun and it won't break. Also the interface is very pleasing with a choice of themes, also if you upload pictures onto it then you can use any of them as a background which you cannot do on an Ipod. It plays music, which is good for an Mp3 player and the X-Fi clarifier works very well with the provided headphones which also are excellent. I read somewhere that the provided headphones are worth £40! Video playback is very good and I have not found a format that the X-Fi cannot play as if the video is in the wrong format then there is an automatic converter built into the "Itunes like" main hub. "Creative Centrale" the actual program which puts the music onto the player works very well importing/burning/transfering to the player. The only problem I have had with the X-Fi is the buttons. There are 9 directional buttons where four would be just fine, as I have never really had a need to go diagonal on a vertical list of songs.

Overall this is a brilliant player that I would throughly recommend.

P.S. Don't be put off by the lightness of the X-Fi, I thought that I had been conned and had been sent a plastic box!! It's very light!

5 out of 5 stars Zen X-Fi   September 22, 2008

One word, superb...

I've been using iPod's for the last few years, and although I must say the click wheel is far better than the traditional buttons used on the Zen its still quite easy to navigate through large libraries.

The best bit... the sound. With iPod's it frustrated me that there was no custom EQ, and that the sound got quite poor and distorted when you added extra bass. The Zen sound quality is quite simply amazing... even with the supplied earphones (which are actually pretty good, a first! The iPod ones are crud!)

If you prefer thin, tinny sound with great navigation... get an iPod.

If you want something which gives you truely amazing music on the go, get a Zen... believe me you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Ipod To Zen X-Fi   January 1, 2009

Right well i am 18 and i get though alot of MP3 players (i normally lose them or brake them) and my last 5 have all bin Ipods ranging from a nano to the touch and i thought there was nothing that could beat a Ipod for a MP3 player.

When my friend got a Zen stone and they let me borrow it for a week or so i could not belive what i have bin missing out on.
No it might not "flow" as well as a Ipod Touch and the software is very basic after coming down from using Itunes for years but i decieded to get a Zen X-Fi

The value for money is outstanding compared to any MP3 i have ever had and the FREE headphones you get with it was better then my 79.99 pair i brought from Sony. The fact that the memory is also exspandable is also a fantasic idea. I have 10GB of music and 4GB of TV Shows so i brought the 8GB X-FI and a 8GB memory card for 92.24!!!!!! I could not belive it would cost atleast double that for a 16GB Itouch

So i would say this is a very good buy for anyone looking for a good strong and very light MP3 player.

5 out of 5 stars Best MP3 Player I found in ages   November 21, 2008

This has got to be the best MP3 player I found in ages. I did a bit of research first to upgrade from my Sony 6gb NW-A1000.

This one had so many more features and just seem to make sense based on the price. One thing I was not sure of was the price, but I am glad that I bought it now.

The unit is very well put together and operation using the buttons on front are very easy to use. The menu system is simple and allows you to get to things real fast.

The headphones are of a good quality and at this point I have not needed to replace them with anything more expensive which may or may not given me better sound.

Loading Music onto it was also important to me. I work with computers day in and day out but still I like things to be simple and intuitive, and Not requiring you to load all sorts of silly software.
So lucky here, you can load the software that comes with it (which you may need to do if you want to put any Videos on it) or, if like me you are using Vista and Window Media player, just plug it in, let Windows find it and then click on Sync and away it goes. After a short while all your music is on your Xen.
This I like as I like to keep my music in MP3 format for maximum portability and not have them coded into some other format that just works on that device (Apple & iPods!!)
