5 out of 5 stars Tremendous bit of kit, once you know how to sort the problems!   August 29, 2009

If like I was, you're thinking of buying an Archos 5 but you're concerned at the number of negative reviews about it crashing and freezing, read on, it may help your decision.

The Archos 5 is put together fantastically well, really sturdy. I'd already invested in a screen protector and an official Archos slip case in advance, and I strongly advise you to do the same. Some reviewers here complain about it getting scratched, but what do you expect if you don't take care of it properly? I've had mine for over two months, and it's 100% mint and scratch free thanks to the case. This isn't an MP3 player that you just chuck into your pocket with your keys and loose change and walk around with. If that's what you want, you should look elsewhere. This is more for use sat down in the car, on planes, and at home, not on the move.

The touch screen is excellent, very responsive and accurate. The five inch screen is stunning, watching movies on it is an absolute pleasure. Great colours and detail. Personally I've had no problem with dead pixels, so I can't commment on that. Sound quality is great, I've heard that some previous Archos players aren't great for sound, but I've no complaints. Note that the in built speaker is rubbish and very tinny, but why would you use it this way anyway? Connected to headphones or speakers, the sound is very good indeed.

You really need to buy the battery dock (NOT the mini dock!) or it'll take aeons to charge through your laptop, plus it doubles battery life, which again is vital for a long flight for example. You'll also need the player plug-ins unfortunately, or there will be lots of file types you won't be able to play. Annoying that you have to buy these, so factor these into the cost of the player before you buy! Haven't invested in the DVR station or the GPS add on yet, but probably will in the coming months.

It's easy to add and remove music and video files, just drag and drop, and the internet access is very good for my straightforward surfing needs.

Now, I must admit I soon was having problems with it crashing, refusing to play files, shutting down, and was at the point of sending it back - I couldn't get through three songs without it freezing! HOWEVER, I soon realised how to fix these issues!

If your player starts crashing, etc, follow these steps:

1. Reset the Archos by holding down the on/off button for ten seconds. If you listen you'll hear a slight click when it's done.
2. Turn it back on, and then navigate to Tools - Settings - Customer Assistance - Repair and Formatting Tools - Clear temporary system files and cache. Now this will take a few minutes to run, but it should sort out all of your crashing issues!

Problems seem to be created after adding and deleting content, it seems to leave lots of residual info that causes trouble, so I regularly run this and now I have no difficulties at all. I'm not sure if the negative reviewers tried this, but I suspect not, seeing as it sorted all my problems instantly. Keep your firmware up to date as well, regularly check for updates.

In summary, this is a GREAT media player (Much better for my needs than the iPod Touch) and I absolutely love it.

I am knocked out by how versatile and technically impressive this piece of kit is. Web browsing , email , video record and play , music , photos, web radio...it's got the lot.....for the person who travels a lot it's ideal.
There are however some things to be aware of. It is not plug and play...it helps to be a bit of a techy to set everything up...or have the assistance of someone who is. The demos on the Archos website are helpful but you will still find gaps that you need to fill in for yourself. The Archos tech support via the web is hopeless, but you can download the full user manual....the little thing that comes with the kit is very limited.
Secondly , if you are going to make recordings (and you probably wouldn't be considering this if you weren't) the DVR station is essential....just not possible without it.
Thirdly , if you are planning to travel and play back through another TV etc. then you either have to take the DVR station with you(which is relatively cumbersome and has a bunch of cables attached to it) or do as I did and purchase the Mini Dock.
Fourthly , there is no separate charger. As a stand alone item it must be charged via USB....so on the move you would need access to a USB outlet or take a separate Mains/USB charger (not supplied). Of course it does charge through both the DVR station and the Mini Dock and it's much faster that way.
These are all things I only fully appreciated after the purchase.
I am delighted with its performance....oh...and I bought the leather case as well!!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it   February 20, 2009

The first thing i would like to say is that so often people compare this to an apple ipod touch/ iphone, yet for me this isn't a realistic comparison - this majors in movies in a way apple is not capable of. The Archos is sleek to look at and stylish. It feels extremely tactile and the touch screen is great.

The primary function of this archos is movies and movie playback (downloading a program will easily let you rip your own dvd's) and at this the archos excels. The screen is superb and easy to watch, sound quality is superb, although i did upgrade to my shure headphones and didn't even try the cheap ones supplied, and battery life lasts comfortably through two back to back movies.

To my mind the other functions are secondary to the excellence of the movie playing capabilities, however, internet browsing was fine, linking through my apple airport quickly and with no fuss. Music playback is also excellent, and as a picture storage device it also excels. However, personally i use this as a movie player that has other functions and at this it is without peer, nothing else comes close.

Having raved for some time now there are clear flaws that have been highlighted in some of the previous reviews, not least the cost. Although build quality and impression of quality is very high, so is the cost. This is not cheap, even with the enormous hard drive. Further archos don't hesitate to try to screw every last penny out of its customers - aac playback? money, link onto a tv? more money and so on. To my mind archos can (and do) do this because of the point i highlighted at the start, the archos has no rivals. No one else does movie players like this, and even the likes of the apple ipod touch doesn't begin to get close.

To sum up - if you want the ultimate in portable movie players, with an impressive array of backup features this is by far the best thing available, nothing else is close. The cost however is also so high and charges keep on coming. If you want music, primarily, and a host other other equal functions superbly realised but are not interested in watching full movies (like about 400 of them) go for the apple.

5 out of 5 stars Archos 5 is it good....Oh yes.   May 13, 2009

I bought the archos 5 after talking to a friend who had one, i needed a replacement for a mp3 player but i needed a decent video player as well. The archos 5 ticks all the boxes for me, portable (and by this i don't mean needs its own briefcase)handles multiple formats for sound and vision and has a decent sized storage capability. File transfer couldn't be easier via a USB that is supplied. As i absolutly hate Windows media 10 and above my heart sank when Archos recomended this for file transfer but to my delight on plugging it into my PC the Archos was detected as a hard drive which allows me to copy and paste all my music and video file direct. My only complaint is that certain files needed to play HD sounds for video are available to download but at a cost. Archos, these should be free. And to connect your Archos 5 to a TV you need a docking station that is not cheap.
The web radio works very well. I haven't used the web TV as i don't really fancy BBC 24 or parlament TV. I have connected to the web via my home wifi hub and this was really easy and with a connection for email setup this is a very powerful tool for fun or work.
All in all this is a great piece of kit.

5 out of 5 stars simply brilliant   March 24, 2009

this is just incredible. The clarity of the screen is unbelievable and big enough to watch movies on, the menu system is easy to use, the features are brilliant, and the fact its basically just an external hard drive you can just drop files on to makes updating easier than other other media player i've owned.

Can't say enough good things about it, an can't even think of anything i can fault it on.... 10/10
