2 out of 5 stars Not good   August 29, 2010

This was bought as a 13th birthday present for my son who is a whizz with technology, unfortunately he is very disappointed with this product as the main reason he wanted it was to play through a TV to watch films, but it wont play through the TV, only plays via laptop or pc, total waste of money, may as well have bought an external hardrive. One very disappointed teenager and I'm not happy having had to shell out so much money for it.

1 out of 5 stars Would have left zero stars if I could!   July 28, 2010

I purchased one of these so that I could upload my DVDs and watch them while overseas instead of lugging discs all over the place. The DivX conversion went smoothly and I checked the films would play on my laptop before transferring them to my Screenplay Director, some through my network and some through a USB connection. First of all I had to go to the DivX website and register the SD in order to be able to play DivX files, no snags there, then I had to upload a video file from DivX to complete the registration, still no problems.

Then I tried to playback one of my DVDs and this is where the problems started... all I got was an error message that the files couldn't be played because they were 'bad container' whatever that means. So I jumped onto the Iomega website to ask for some help. After eventually connecting with a 'live chat' representative he asked me to update the firmware on the device. I followed his instructions and updated without any problems. However, now my Screen Director won't respond to the Iomega software on my network, even if I manually set it up, the DivX files still won't play and to top it off I am now informed that my Director has 1.8Tb free (it actually only have about 1/2 of that). So, all in all the 'update' has made matters worse. I went back to the 'live chat' and fortunately got the same operator (if I were cynical I would say they only had one which would explain the delay in getting a response). He asked me to download some other software from another website and send in a report so that they could 'investigate further' (all the time I got the feeling he was sitting there sticking two fingers up at me).

I am very disappointed and think that I will be consigning this to the loft and just take an external HDD with me with some DVDs on it instead. It means I will have to connect the HDMI to my TV through my laptop and the external HDD which I was trying to avoid but it'll be less hassle than trying to deal with Iomega. If I can offer any potential buyers some advice about this product it would be; DON'T BUY ONE!
