4 out of 5 stars Decent, straightforward player   August 18, 2010

I must start by emphasising that all I want from a Walkman/iPod/mp3 player etc is to play music, so to this end I was looking for something simple that just plays music that I like. This new Sony Walkman does this in a usefully simple way.
Unlike some previous Sony Walkman products, that required specialist software (Sonic Stage) to upload music files, this mp3 player simply uses Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player, which is far easier if indeed you are using Windows. It's basically a pen drive that you can then play music portably from. Because of this, if you own a stereo system that enables you to put USB device in to play music, this Walkman should oblige and play through your system. Again, previous 'protected' versions of Walkmans did not allow this.
The bass boost is good, and gives decent quality sound to songs (especially when you listen to tracks that have strong basslines...) and makes them more complete than previous products may have done. I have tried the microphone and it is far more powerful than I thought it would be (don't speak too close to it...) but works fine, if you like quirky little extras like this. The unique quick charge is also very useful.
One minor criticism is the Shuffle function. Shuffling on the previous Walkman I had meant that if a track came on, it didn't come on again until you re-charged it (in other words, it never repeated a song unless you went through the entire music collection on the mp3 player). It now does repeat songs, and a few times I've listened to one song and ten minutes later the same song comes back on. Not, in my opinion, the true meaning of the term Shuffle but still - only a minor fault.
Basically, if you want an easy to use thing that plays music whilst you're going about your daily business, I'd recommend this product.

Does its job well, the play options include shuffle, repeat and, despite the size, you can browse through the music library using the small screen on the device. The design is fine, but after having used the iPod for years, the player can feel a bit plasticy.

As for the other features

- Zappin: A way to quickly browse through the music collection. The player will play a short section of songs for you to choose. Personally, I find it rather annoying. There doesn't seem to be a clear way to cancel this mode and get out to the song that you're currently playing. Moreover the cheesy voice going "Zappin in" and "Zappin out" doesn't have much appeal to me.

- Quick charge: Now this is something I can appreciate. Extremely useful for someone forgetful, who will often fail to charge the player over night as I do. Being able to quickly charge it in the morning before going out is very convenient.

- Bass boost: This seems to work brilliantly with some songs, and kinda messes up some other. Not too badly though, for those that this mode doesn't bode well with, there seem to be an extra constant pitch in the background.

- File transfer: Really easy to use, since it is recognised by the computer (in this case, Vista) as USB storage device, so files can be copied onto the player directly. Also tried using Windows Media Player, and that works fine as well.

(NB: Haven't had the need to use the voice recorder or the other equilizer modes yet, so they're still unknown)

If the light around the play button gets to you like it did for me, that can be turned off. The only major annoyance that I have come across after a while is that after a while, is how player is charged by attaching it to the computer. This is not ideal for taking it on holiday if you're not gonna drag your laptop everywhere with you. There are, however, USB power adapter that can be bought.

Final note, be aware of the misleading image of the product on both this site and Sony's own. This model does not include FM radio, only models with names ending in F (as far as I know) do.

3 out of 5 stars 4G MP£ Walkman   August 31, 2010

Fair value for money, and the quick charge function works well. However overall design is dated e.g. display size very limiting, controls not very user friendly, track selector very clunky. Protective cap for USB connector should be captive in some way, too easy to loose. No support for ATRAC used by older Walkman products.

2 out of 5 stars not quite good   July 22, 2010

I bought this to replace an older Sony MP3 player, thinking it would save any problems transferring my substantial electronic music collection over. This is not compatable with Sonicstage, using Windows Media Player instead, but this software won't import most of the music I own. I've even tried using ITunes but this won't connect with the player either. Why do Sony play these games with compatibility and let us buy the thing and just use it?

It seems I now have no choice but to re-import hours of music back into my computer from CD's a 2nd time and loose all previously owned music.

It is also only possible to play one album at a time. It doesn't seem to just keep playing through the collection, which is a bit of a pain.

These problems are a shame as I like these little players in general and have loved my older Sony player and would rather pay less for more than splash out on an Ipod for the sake of it.
